Attending Church (Protestant)

Gringoes enjoy each other's company, and many of them want spiritual fellowship. So when you get a successful English-speaking church around Lake Chapala, that's where everyone goes, regardless of their denomination.

Located on the main highway in Rivera, Lake Chapala Baptist Church is THE place to be on a Sunday morning. Starting off with a big, free breakfast, about 200 adults attend the church service. A friendly mixture of Anglicans, Baptists, Pentecostals, Catholics, and others, the church actually provides good Bible teaching, singing, outreach, and friendship. The congregation is a successful blend of American, Canadian, Irish, British, and Mexicans who speak English.

The morning I attended, they baptized an adult convert, and then we all had lunch together. Pastor Bob Hendricks and his wife Judy are a big help to a lot of people, and they had helped me find a place to stay during my week-long visit.

The church has a Mexican pastor as well, and they are involved in both spiritual outreach and charity work for the Mexican community.

Jerry and Jude are a married couple who are very active in the church. A Monday night Bible study in their house was well-attended, and it was followed by good food and good fellowship. In addition to having fun, I was able to get a lot of good advice on actually moving to Mexico.

If you are confident of your Spanish, there are a few Mexican Protestant churches in the area as well.
