Mexican Relatives

Anyone with thoughts/opinions about retiring in Mexico when one member of a couple is a native Mexican, the other American.
My husband was born and lived the first 16 years or so in Morelia, Michoacán. He became a naturalized American in 2008. Most of his family (7 of 8 living sisters and a huge extended family) stayed in Mexico, primarily in the Michoacán area, but also in a few different states.
It would be relatively easy for my husband to get his Mexican citizenship back (only from the Mexican government’s point of view) upon retiring in Mexico. As his spouse, I imagine my residency would be straightforward, too.
My concerns are primarily about meeting the Mexican family’s expectations about family involvement. I would not want to live in Michoacán for that reason, but living anywhere in Mexico would still bring expectations for attending many family gatherings.
We have lived apart from such expectations for our entire marriage (I don’t have a family here with such expectations). I do not have a desire to be part of all of these family events. I believe I will be looked upon unfavorably for not doing so, like a snob or ant-social in a very social culture.
I would like to know how others may have navigated this situation. If you know of couples that have been in similar circumstances or blogs that address my concerns, I would so appreciate a referral.
