Ajijic - Currency Exchange During Visit

Hello - my sister and I will be traveling to Ajijic at the end of August. I had read in a book published in 2005 that you should plan on using ATMs to get pesos - that credit cards are not accepted and USD weren't accepted everywhere.

I'd like to be a good visitor, and respectful of the area. Is the advice in the book still "good"?
