Ajijic and the Lake Chapala area

I have received contradicting information regarding the safety in this area. However, as an American citizen, I no longer feel that the United States is a personally safe place to live. I'm ready to jump into a new community, meet new friends, get involved in volunteer work, get rid of my car and start walking and riding my bike more.
