Mazatlan or Puerto Vallarta - which is better for U.S. retirees?

We are planning on retiring to Mexico in late 2025, and are beginning now to proceed with getting temporary residency in Mexico. We aren't really partiers and will be looking for a relaxed life in a beach city. We have some Spanish skills and will be learning a lot more before we move. Since we're moving from Texas, the summer heat on Pacific Coast Mexico is not as severe as we're already used to, so we're hoping that isn't going to be an issue for us.

We're coming to Mexico for week-long visit in late September, and would love to get others' thoughts on how to choose between these two marvelous places. We visited Mazatlan back in the 1980s, and have never been to PV.
