building in La Paz

1. Moroccan/Spanish architecture -- high walls w/ small or no windows, surrounding central courtyard -- is both energy- efficient and more secure. US -style, stick-and-plywood construction isn't right for the climate or economical .
2. Ask around for a good contractor, get {everything} in writing if possible, and don't be afraid to hover until you feel comfortable with the work.
3. Expect power and water outages (note the rooftop cisterns).
4. Get to know your neighbors, and check Club Cruceros for sailors who are always glad to house-sit air-conditioned homes in summer.
Hope this helps.
