Travel with d7

Hello
I have 2 questions.
Does anyone know whether after the initial D7 interview while you are waiting for the residency card if you are allowed to travel? I would like to visit my family in England for a few days. I may not get my card before I return to Canadá as my initial appt is June 18 and my departure from Portugal is July 10 so I would need to visit before this time.
Also, I do t remember ever seeing that the 2 entries count the first time you enter Portugal. It seems obvious that you have to enter Portugal. Why would that even be considered one of the entries?
Thank you

William Russell
