salary clarification

Hi, my wife, two kids and myself have spoken to an immigration consultant about relocation to NZ. However, some of what he has told us seems a little suspect. He tells us that the NZ$ has the same buying power as the GB£ does in England. When I have looked at info on ExpatExchange this does not seem to be the case (a loaf of bread for example costs $2.75 in NZ but I pay around £1 or less in the UK). I am obviously concerned that NZ may be too expensive for us to live in because I have also been told I will not even come close to earning a wage that compares to my current wage in the UK.
If anyone could shed a little light on this subject I would greatly appreciate it. It would also help if anyone could tell me how much I could earn as a social worker in NZ as I am getting very vague info from the consultant regarding this issue.
