Moving To NZ For 3 months

Hello All!

My boyfriend and I(20's and 30's), will be moving to N.Z. from the U.S.for at least 3 months starting in September. He is a citizen but hasnt been back in 20 so we are excited to see his homeland!
Ive been reading a lot of these forums and searching around the site but i still have some questions i was hoping someone could answer.
- To my understanding housing rental are by the week? is there a minimum for the length of stay on a property? We are wanting to travel around the Islands and hotels seem to be more expensive.
- How do car rentals work, do they have possibly rvs for rent(easy for travel)
- is there public transportation throughout N.Z.?
