Buying a Camper VS Renting One

This has been a daily topic for us. we are traveling to NZ for a long period of time and cant decide if buying or renting a camper or car is the best option. They each have their plus and minus, but i would love some feed back from anyone who has experienced this.
our instinct is to buy a vehicle, with hopes that we can sell it again at the end of our trip.
-how likely is it we would be able to sell our vehicle again if its in very similar condition?
however if we rent, it can be expensive, and adding petrol prices into the cost...it all adds up.. advice?
