Hello. I'm considering accepting a job offer for a research firm in Oslo. I'm concerned about having a social life there, though, based on what I've read about Norwegians taking some time to warm up to someone.
Here's my situation: I'm a single male, 38, currently living in the States. Though I've lived many different places in my own country, this would be my first experience living outside of it. I'd be moving there alone, and I don't know anyone in Norway except for some of my potential co-workers -- and I just met them during my interview.
Further, I can sometimes be a little shy, though I'm working on that. And although I like volleyball and hiking and would be willing to try skiing, I'm not really athletic (compared to Norwegians, anyway) and I don't know much about sports -- and all of that seems to be a big deal in Norway.
So, taking all that into consideration, I'm hoping some of you with more experience in Norway, and with being an expat in general, might be able to provide some thoughts on what I can expect there socially. Am I looking at a tough time?
Thanks much for any advice.
Mike
