Panama as the final Destination

We are planning to make our 20th wedding anniversary trip as our initial exploration to Panama – any recommendations.

We have been talking about Panama as our next (and more than likely the final) destination within the next couple of years or sooner depending on the 2012 elections. During our extensive travels, we found Costa Rica to be a very pleasant country. We have not been to Panama with an exception of a cruise from Florida to California. Yes, Panama Canal is an engineering marvel, and not much more, except a tremendous economic benefit to the country.

I am originally from Finland (dual US and Finnish citizenship) – 41 years in the US (on my one-year exchange program repeated a few times) – lived 8 years in Atlanta, GA - 27 in Houston, TX and now 6 in Austin, TX. I am a CPA with extensive professional experience in the high-end hotel business, consumer goods manufacturing and distribution, as well as a long-term part-time (30-year) CPA practice (tax, consulting, QuickBooks) with entrepreneurial clientele – which for the most part can be maintained via Internet.

My wife is originally from Austin, TX with the interests in choral singing, birds (have 50+ at the house) and plants (not very good with the current no-rain Texas summer).

As to Spanish fluency – tengo que practicarlo mas – I spent four months in Mexico City back in 1972 while I was relatively proficient with the language at that time. The minimum requirement in the Finnish high school is 4 languages. Finnish and Swedish are the two official languages in the country of ½ of Texas with the population of Greater Houston (5+ million) – two down and nowhere to go.

Any comments and recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
