Where to live inland in Panama?

Hi Everybody.

I plan to spend the coming winter in Panama, and am interested in your points of view about where to stay.

I've read lots about Boquete, El Valle, Panama City and other coastal areas, but not much else. Are there other places where expats congregate? What other places do you like?

I'm interested in living inland, away from the heat of the coastal areas, in a town about the size of Boquete or Volcan (if indeed they're the same size), though I've read that some people find Boquete to be too cool. I also want to be in a place where there is a swimming hole nearby. Finding out about swimming other than on the coasts has been a challenge! I'd also like to live in a place where I can easily get around town on foot.

Speaking of on foot, I get the impression that all or most expats have cars. How necessary/desirable is it to have a car or scooter where you are? I currently live in a small-ish town on the Costa Del Sol where everything is quite compact, so that it's easy to get just about anywhere within about 20 minutes. I would say that most people don't own cars. For me, I love not having the hassle of having to drive everywhere.

Another question I have is about visas. If I go for 6 months, it will be on a tourist visa which, I understand is good for only 30 or 90 days, depending on what I read. Can I get the visa renewed, or can I leave the country for a day or two and get a new visa when I re-enter (I'm Canadian)? I'm getting conflicting information.
