Harvesting Rainwater in Panama

Harvesting rainwater is the key for year round water. In some places you can also dig a well. Living fences are truly great. Best way to build a fence in my opinion. The story here in Panama is that you could stick a 2x4 in the ground and it will grow. A 365 day growing season...............nice. I lived in Acequia (definition meaning an irrigation ditch or canal), just past Dolega near Potrerillos for awhile and had a house there with a pool to cool off and thought it was great but it was still too warm for me as it was in the ninety degree temperature range for a high. It was great because I had a pool. I like a low of 60, a high of 80 and an average temperature of 70 which is what I always used to set my thermostat for in North America. Those temperatures describe Boquete proper at 3500 to 4000 feet, so that is where I eventually settled, but without a pool as you need a hotter climate for one. There are some pools in Boquete but rarely used. It is not swimming weather here. Acequia and Potrerillos are great but they are more farm oriented properties than I liked. I wanted to be closer to a subdivision of people in a cooler climate. In the past I have lived on 6 acres, and 2 acres, but the big property idea didn't feel right for me in Panama such as Acequia. Just more property chores and work to do. At one time I was up at the crack of dawn to do my farm chores. Not so much anymore. To each his own. Advantages and disadvantages no matter which way you choose. And I do have a big farm in Penonome that I will probably find someone to take it over as I believe my farming days are over. I am hanging up my overalls and straw hat. But for lots of water, if you decide on catchment, rainy season will supply you with all of the rain that you could possibly ever use year round. Most people dig ditches or canals to get rid of the water rather than save it for dry season mid December to May, and then of course they complain how dry it is and that they don't have any water for irrigation and their green space place turns deathly brown. Harvesting water in our monsoon rainy season is absolutely the best thing to be doing.
