Moving to the Philippines

I am planning on leaving the US in the first part of 2009, and the Philippines in among the destinations I am considering. I have read quite a bit, though I still do not feel I have as clear a picture as I would like. Perhaps you can help me.

Firstly, I am wondering about possible employment. I have read that it is difficult to get a good job, but I am not concerned about making a lot of money. I have not completed a degree, but I do have several years of college. I am interested in teaching English, though I understand this is difficult, as many Filipinos already speak it. I am a native speaker, well read and have a strong command of the English language. I have been told that Japanese businessmen operating in the Philippines would possibly hire me to teach their employees.

I have considered possibly volunteering with some type of organization, as this may be a way to get to the country, and get used to it, cheaply. If anyone has suggestions about organizations I could contact with regards to this, let me know.

I am also wondering about monthly expenses, and how much money I should leave with. I have heard many different answers to this question, though it still is not clear to me. I would probably be interested in living in a rural area, at least eventually.

I have also found in my research that if I were to marry a local woman, I would be able to stay indefinitely, and wanted to get people's views on this.

Thank you.
-Andre
