Return trip ticket question

Mylene and I have booked our flight to Manila for October 26, 2009.
As a Philippine citizen she is traveling one way since we are planning to move there.
As a U.S. citizen I am required to have a return trip ticket.
Since we are planning to stay in the Phils once I have my visa extended through my marriage to Mylene, does it matter what the return date is on the return trip ticket?
Can it be three, four, six months beyond my arrival date?
Or do I have to continually change my departure date on my ticket at great expense?
Maybe I am making the simple complex, but I'm trying to do this right.
Once again, I thank you for your help.
Denny
