Manila airport scam

Greetings everyone,
This platform has changed quite a bit since the last time that I was here. It really looks good!

Well, there’s situation in the Philippines that we here in the States continue to hear about, and as usual, I always come to you Expats who are in the Philippines as my first form of inquiry. We are hearing that there are airport employees who are putting bullets in the luggage of unsuspecting foreigners to shake them down for money. The Filipinos here in the states are concerned at what this may do to the country’s economy. How real is this scam and is there anything being done to deter it?
