Help! bugs are attacking my wooden ceiling

I noticed a pile of dark brown-grey grinds like pepper appearing on my white night table, all in the same spot for two days now. About two tablespoons or more a day. There is a tiny hole in the ceiling which is where they must be falling from. My neighbour said they are small wood eating bugs. Does anyone know how I can kill these bugs and be rid of them?
