Why do Pinays habitually call the guys 'dear'?

Not sure if it's acceptable among Americans, but Australians generally don't like it.

In my experience only taxi-girls (whores) use those terms as a matter of course.

It irritates me greatly. My parents gave me a name, and that who I am.
