Freezing your bank account has when you pass away

There was a recent post on this topic. I wondered if the Family Law provision about this (probate) issue applies if it is a joint account? Raises questions about what your survivors can do to support themselves. I'm considering leaving a joint bank account open in Canada that has a Western Union service & then getting a good safe? Can anyone elaborate?
