Safety (from the system)

Hi, I might be moving to the country soon for a new job.

After some research I am quite concerned about the absence of rule of law - coupled with some recent policies...

From the stories I've read, it seems all it takes is to upset the wrong idiot with connections to end thrown in a local prision for years, with planted evidence or without even a proper charge or trial.

I am mostly concerned because, from what I've read, some of these foreigners were not even doing anything shady.
I'm also clean in that regard but some people may lose their job because of me.

Are there any conclusions the community has drawn from these stories as in what to do to stay out of trouble? or is it just random? can your employers protect you to some extent?
