Anyone Know Leyte

I arrive on the 22nd next month for my exploratory trip, and was thinking of taking the ferry from Cebu to Ormoc, and travel to the Tacloban area for a bit and maybe see a touch of Samar. Good or bad idea, and what about a car rental? I will be alone unless I make a new friend there. Thanks!
