Holidays

Halloween is not celebrated around where I live. But Nov.1 is a big deal. We are hosting a large family and friends dinner with kids. Christmas is the next big event. Then New Years. Christmas brings relentless caroling and begging. Christmas Day many of the less fortunate residents come for a food hand out. We serve over 200 meals, mostly to children and the poor old folks. New Years brings 2 non stop days of Keroke and drinking. Then it’s finally over. A tradition I have noticed is when there is a death in a family, a small tent is erected outside the gate and chairs and tables are set up. Your status in the community is shown by how many locals stop by for a visit with your survivors, a wake of sorts that lasts several days. There was one on our street and only just a few relatives came. Being the only Westerner in my Barangay, I hope the turn out. For other Expats, what is the holiday season like where you live?
