Buying a Motor Scooter

Hi..My First Post ..I am a New Zealander presently cleaning up my affairs to enable me to fly to Mactan in April/May then to Bohol...I have a plan on what I would like to initially do..I do not want to get bogged down initially in one big city or one place so I thought of buying or hiring a scooter as soon as I can after arrival and just going round Bohol on the coast road and get a feel for the people,the seaside, the food , etc and If I enjoy doing that I could cross to another Island..What Concerns me is what about the scooter ...Do I hire or would it be more viable to buy a new or used one and at what cost...Maybe even do a deal with an expat who has a scooter and is intending leaving and wanting to sell his scooter ...Does anybody have any advice for me ..I have been advised I have to be careful buying a scooter when not from a reputable dealer ..is that True? plus a change of ownership in the Philippines looks very complicated..
I have a lot of questions prior to my arrival but they can wait.. the scooter one is at this point of time a priority... Thankyou Ron NZ
