Flowers on Mothers Day

When I lived in Philippines, I did not notice that many people buy fresh roses for mothers. Maybe it is universal? In any case, looking for a little feedback.

My wife received silk flowers made by our daughter along with other things such as chocolate. My wife threw these in the garbage and said this was not a real gift and proceeded to have a tantrum. It this a general thing in the philippines or just my wife.

As part of this, my mother-in-law did get a boquet of real flowers (cost $46 US dollars) from my wife. She gets flowers for every ooccassion basically because the mother-in-law demands it. This adds up to quite a lot of money for me. Given, I pay the mother-in-laws rent, food, utilities and have done so for 7 years, am I being unreasonable cutting the extras out. I feel it is quite unfair for me to pay what I can barely afford. And certainly only flower money can be better spent on something to improve lifestyles.

Thinking I am sucker or the flower thing is another cultural thing I just don't understand.
