International Living magazine's current issue, January 2021, presents its annual Global Retirement Index, rating 25 countries by 10 characteristics such as housing, cost of living, medical care and such.

The Philippines is not listed in the top 25 or mentioned in the accompanying article. Malaysia was the first S.E. Asian choice, 7th overall. Vietnam was 10th overall and 2nd S.E.Asian with Cambodia 3rd and 10th. Thailand was 18th overall and 4th S.E. Asian. Number 1 was Costa Rica, Nicaragua was last. Thus, according to International Living, the Phils is less appealing than Nicaragua for retirement. That's scary I think and gave me lots more to consider. Ireland was 14th which would make my ancestors happy begorrah!

IIRC, the Phils was high on this list just a handful of years ago. What happened? I don't know but it has sure lost whatever cachet it had with these folks who claim expertise in that their ratings are from people in those countries, not remote by-standers.
