Dumaguete - surprisingly bad

I just visited Dumaguete inspired by the great write ups and YouTube videos on how great a retirement destination it was. I booked for five nights but flew at after two - the place was nothing like I expected. It was awfully bad! I wandered up the foreshore and in and around the town but just found nothing worthwhile. It looked like a real struggle town - everything kind of run down and grimy. Nothing holiday-like about it. Did I miss something? Is there some other fantastic area that I just didn't get to?
