Visa & Flight Questions

We are planning to retire to Portugal later this fall & had a couple questions we would appreciate any help on. 1. Should we be trying to secure a Schengen Visa or a Residency Visa if we want to stay permanently. I know we must apply for a residence permit once we get there?? 2. I understand we need to provide firm flight reservations for both flights to and from Portugal for our appoint with the consulate. How do you recommend we proceed with a booking confirmation. Do we actually have to book a round trip flight with a return within 90 days?? Would appreciate any help you can provide
