Short Trip to Explore

My wife and I have been reading a lot about Portugal and have discussed it as a possible retirement destination. Hard to believe we are looking at retirement as I still feel like I never want to grow up (haha). I am from US and have traveled and lived abroad several times for work (UK, Middle East, Far East, South/Central America, Caribbean). My wife is from UK and she has traveled some through Europe. She has mainly been in US for most of the last 25+ years.

Neither of us have ever been to Portugal. We have each separately been to Spain, which neither of us really connected with. We are going to the UK this summer to visit family/friends (and attend Rolling Stones Concert in London) and this would be a perfect opportunity to make a trip to Portugal to check it out.

Originally was hoping to spend at least 10 days in country to explore multiple areas, but work commitments and family schedules in UK have pretty much limited us to only 3 or 4 days in June (20-24). We still want to make the trip to Portugal. Our original thoughts were to check out Lisbon and the Algarve area. From some of the reading am beginning to reconsider Lisbon because we have never been city dwellers (nice to visit, but wouldn't want to live there sort of thing). Recent readings have also suggested Cascais except that the cost may be more than the Algarve area.

So am thinking that we may fly into Lisbon and then concentrate most of our time in the Algarve area and then go to Lisbon for a brief visit before flying back to the UK.

Would be interested in any advice on where in the Algarve area to check out, and if anyone is around and available during the June time frame to meet and share advice that would be great as well.

Thanks to everyone for their time.
