Hi All,

I'm gathering as much info as I can before making contact with http://eimigrante.pt/en. Have any of you used their services or have recommendations for similar companies?

I'm retired and not from the EU (Oz but I am not living there anymore) and I am looking to move to Portugal and it seems that the Central Region may be a good choice as well as the Algarve (Querença north of Loulé?). What recommendations can you make for Real Estate Agents for the Castelo Branco district and for the area of the Algarve between Loulé and Querença?

I would like to rent first and also obtain a Temporary Residency Visa as per the following page with the view of buying a small farm.

Has anybody, here, followed this route?

What about a Non-habitual Residency (NHR) visa? Does anyone know if the following is a feasible plan?

If I buy a property with a house and live in it for 182 days and then go off touring the rest of Europe on my bicycle, or wherever, and return after 183 days, would that entitle me to a NHR visa without paying any taxes?

"All residents have to pay tax in Portugal on their worldwide income, unless they are considered a non-resident taxpayer. You are considered a tax resident if you have been living in Portugal for at least 183 days during a tax year or if you have a permanent residence there on 31 December."

What does "... or if you have a permanent residence there on 31 December." indicate?

Is it still the case that you have 1 year, after receiving a Residency Visa, to import your belongings without paying any import taxes?

Are there any restrictions and/or limitations on what can be imported?

For those of you who are currently renting, I have the following questions.

What is the monthly cost?

Where are you renting? In town? Outside of town?

What are you renting?

For everybody, I have the following questions.

Are your neighbours considerate and quiet at night? Are you able to get to bed at a civilised hour (9PM) without any outside disturbances like barking dogs and inconsiderate and dysfunctional people having loud parties?

Do you like your current location? If so, why? If not, why not? What are the Pros and Cons of your location?

Is cycling (Road & Mountain) popular in the above areas?

Are there any GMO crops grown in your area/district etc.?

Was it possible to have a cable Internet connection? How much did the installation cost? What is the monthly fee? Are there any bandwidth restictions? With which company?

How much does Electricity cost? Is it the same cost for all regions of Portugal? What are your current costs and appliance usage and potency (standing charge per day, cost per kWh, potencia)? Is it 3 phase or Single phase? Is it earthed?

I currently use 45-60 kWh per month with a Laptop and Refrigerator running 24/7.

What type of light bulb sockets are used in Portugal, Screw or Bayonet?

How much does Gas cost? 10kg, 20kg? A 10kg cyclinder lasts me 3 to 4 months for cooking and heating water for a mug of tea.

How much does Water cost?

How much does Garbage Collection cost? Is there still a charge if you are out of town on a small farm? Do they even collect garbage from such properties?
