Newark D7 form and evidence

Hello,

I’m a retired American (Newark area) wanting to apply for the D7 residence visa and permit. I’ve read as much as I can online, but I have a few clarifying questions that I was hoping someone might know answers to.

1. Do I apply using the online form on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ website (https://www.vistos.mne.pt/en/visa-application/apply-for-a-visa)? It looks like a generic Schengen visa application, so I want to be sure.

2. The form asks for “duration of stay” as well as arrival and departure dates. I’ve read on this forum that 120 days is appropriate for duration. I’m unsure how to calculate arrival and departure. Is the date of my application plus four months cutting it too close, from others’ experience?

3. The form asks my purpose of travel. The options are business, sports, cultural, other, and a few more. My purpose is to use the visa to apply in country for the D7 permit and if successful, reside in Portugal for the allowed year. Do I select “other” in this case?

4. What is required for the supporting evidence? For example, can I use a hotel booking or Airbnb to meet the housing conditions requirement? I’ve read this can depend on the consulate you apply to, and it’s worrying to commit to a year lease when there’s no guarantee of a visa. Does anyone have recent experience with Newark?

5. Is a flight confirmation also expected by Newark?

Any help or advice folks can provide would be greatly appreciated. I want to do this by the letter, but there seems to be much left to interpretation.
