Problem with CTT

When CTT delivers a package, is it customary here to open it and check for damage when it’s delivered? I shipped 4 large boxes of household goods from the US to Porto. They and their contents arrived intact in Lisbon. CTT said so. However, the contents of one box was damaged when it reached Porto. I blame the delivery van driver or CTT Customs. I say this because CTT flipped the box upside down and opened it from the bottom, ignoring the fragile stickers. When they repacked the item, of course they didn’t do it as I had. They couldn’t since the box wasn’t opened from the top. CTT blames me saying I didn’t pack the item carefully. I replied I had shipped the same item abroad 5 previous times packed in the same manner and it arrived intact. Moreover, it arrived in Lisbon undamaged. This proves there was nothing wrong with the way I packed. It’’s clear CTT is responsible. When I when to CTT to file a damage claim, it wouldn’t honor it because I didn’t open the box at the moment of delivery to check for damage. This doesn’t make sense to me. Neither Amazon nor IKEA expect customers to open boxes / packages upon delivery. Why should CTT? Anyone have a similar experience with CTT and how did you handle it?
