What is it about Portugal that made you locate there?

I'm going to be looking for an apartment that is near to a city but not actually within one. I'm a country girl, but one who also loves creature comforts. Can you please make suggestions?
My friend and I are flying in to Lisbon July 23 and will plan to be in country until August 7th. If there is an Expat group having a meeting or gathering and would be willing to chat with us for a bit, that would be fantastic!!
