D7 Retirement Visa - US Citizens moving to Portugal

Hello! My wife and I have decided to move to Portugal from the US as I plan to retire March 2025. We are very excited and are very much looking forward to enchanting Portugal!

We have both been expats before: I was born in the US and previously lived in Panama, and my wife is originally from Colombia before moving to the US. We spent 5 years living Dubai, returning to the us a little over two years ago.

I have done quite a bit of research, and on the one hand there is plenty of detailed info for what's required to apply for a D7 visa. On the other hand, it is very confusing (at least to me) what order to do these things in. Some say get the tax ID and open a bank account before applying, other sites say to do the application and then apply for tax ID and bank account. And these are only three of the things needed to be done to apply - lots of permutations!

So I have two questions:

1) Does anyone know where I can find a valid, official goverment list of what's required to apply for a D7 - in the order I need to do them?

2) There are confusing sites with information regarding making the appointment. Some say you must make the appointment and then fill out the application, but the Portuguese consulate in Newark NJ (closest to me) on their web site wants me to complete an application online first. To apply online, do I need to include all documents that are required before I can go in person? And when I finish the online application, am I automatically scheduled or do I need to call the consulate?

I am obviously a "noob" - thanks for taking time to read this.

John
