American citizen need visa, temporary residency

Hi everyone! I am new to the forum- I joined because I have been dating my boyfriend (who is Romanian and lives in Bucharest) for almost 2 years while I live in Boston (I am an American citizen). We go back and forth for visits every few months without issue, but I want to move to RO long term (minimum 1 year, maybe more). I have spent a few months in Romania and am ready for change, but I can't figure out how to obtain a visa or temporary residency there.

I am TEFL certified and plan to teach remotely online and/or be a virtual assistant, so I don't intend to get a job in Bucharest. I have been learning Romanian for a little while and hope to pick it up quickly once I am there to practice.

Anyone have any experience as a non-EU national moving to Romania for longer than the 90 tourist visa allows?
