WARNING! Teaching in Saudi arabia

Dear All,

I have been concerned about some of the questions in the past and also alot of publicity in Arab News ( look it up) about teachers being conned / deceived / trapped in Saudi arabia.

There is a new group of agencies ( that mainly are recruiting teachers for University work) that are totally unscrupulous.

YOU HAVE NO HUMAN RIGHTS HERE- IF YOUR SPONSOR IS CORRUPT.

I have been happily teaching here for 5 years, some of my freinds for 25 years- I love it - BUT we work for a reputable organisation. If you are working at reputable schools ( also see TES. co uk forum overseas and ask) These things do not apply.

WARNING SIGNS.
Never come on a visit / business or any visa except a proper one that gives you residency and an Igama.

This requires extensive medicals and paperwork prior to leaving your home country.

Original certifictaes of your quailfications. Teachers are not allowed here unless they have a degree and teacher training qualification- so if you are offered a job without these qualifiactions then you are unlikely to be getting an Igama.

Marriage certificates etc translated into arabic.

I would advise to work directly for a sponsor ie the actual University not an agency.

Get a proper contract in advance of travel. Get it translated and read the arabic if you are going through an agency ( ie not working directly for university or reputable school) Especially get in writing when your family will follow ( although again this is useless if they start to abuse you.)

People have left here VERY out of pocket ( 10,000 SAR fine for not having correct exit visa when they tried to leave) False allegation made to justify no payment. No family allowed to come when promised, no salary for over three months.
