Basics of moving to Scotland

Let's start with a basic - power supplies for electronics. Can a simple adapter ordered from Amazon be used with hair dryers, usb wall chargers, blu-ray players, laptops, electric kettles, etc?

How much is it worth taking with us as far as personal belongings? We have some furniture that's less than a year old that we'd hate to part with, but we know shipping costs are incredibly high.
