National Service

Hello, I'm a US citizen, considering accepting an opportunity to work in Singapore. However, I am a little confused by the regulations around Compulsitory National Service. My son is 17 and I would hate to come to SG and he need to go into the Service. I understand, from digging around, that Permanent Residents qualify for national service. However, can anyone explain if PR is required to work in Singapore or can one simlpy get a work Visa?
