where to live in Singapore

Hi there! My boyfriend and I are moving to Singapore at the end of the year. He's had lived in Singapore but has given me the task of finding us a place or at least the area where we will live in...He wasn't sold on the area he used to live in...

A few things about us:

~We are in mid 30's and 40's
~Will eventually get a city car, but not initially
~being near the water would be nice but it is not a requisite
~we would work from home
~we don't have any children
~we rather be in the city center than outside but Singapore seems to be small enough where we could be a bit out if we found the perfect place
~i think we prefer an old shophouse style apt to the highrise style apt, although the amenities of some of those highrises are nice

Any help/direction would be greatly appreciated!!!
