Healthcare in Spain

I understand that if you have paid enough NI contributions in the UK, and if you are a pensioner, and if you are working, you can have access to the Spanish healthcare.

If you don't fall into any of these three categories, do you have to have private medical insurance? What happens if whilst you are looking for a job you become ill, being a resident without a job, and not old enough to be a pensioner, what happens? What if you can't find a job? I read somewhere that if you are a resident and have less than 100,000, you can access the health care? Could anyone explain to me how it works please. Thank you
