Cafe culture in Spain...?

I am from the New York City area, and I lived for many years in Manhattan. I love a city full of culture, with many cafes and restaurants. I would like to relocate to a city in Spain that is large enough that there are plenty of those kind of places to eat, drink, and relax -- large enough so that, by the time you think you are running out of new adventures, you visit a neighborhood you haven't been to in a while and there are new places -- so you never end up feeling like you have a very finite number of places to hang out.

New York is big, but I don't think that would be my criteria. I have been to Barcelona, and it was well-above the minimum size to enjoy endless cafe exploration. I am certain Madrid would easily qualify. But what are some of the other cities that, while not as big, would be big enough / dynamic enough not to become boring? Is Alicante too small? Malaga? Valencia?
