British citizen with Spanish spouse wanting to live and work in both UK and Spain

As a university professor (British university) who might choose to retire to Spain in a couple of years, happily married to my Spanish wife and with homes in UK (in my name) and Madrid (in my wif'es name), I'm trying to find the best way for us to live in both countries. Sometimes we are together in UK, sometimes together in Spain, sometimes we are apart. I don't have Spanish residence or a Spanish work permit, and my wife doesn't have UK residence or a UK work permit. How best to arrange our affairs for now and make the transition to living mostly in Spain in the future? Sounds simple but seems immensely complicated?
