Need advice on Thai society (Phuu Yai)

I will be visiting an acquaintance in Thailand. I got to know her in Chicago (she was a waitress at a restaurant I frequented) and she has invited me to stay with her and her family in Loei. I've read about Phuu Yai in Thai culture, and wondered how this will affect my interactions with her and her parents & siblings, etc. Do I offer to pay them for my stay? How much? Or should I bring gifts? If so, what would be appropriate (I live in Germany right now)?
And, perhaps most importantly, how will my standing as Phuu Yai (since I am a foreigner) affect what happens when the bill comes in restaurants or entry fees and the like? I don't feel like I could let them pay for everything, but I
don't want to insult them or have any "losing face" if I try to pay.

Help!

Thanks
~Audrey :-)
