Train to Chiang Mai

Hi all,
We will be arriving in Bangkok and are going to Chiang Mai in June. We will have a few suitcases that may be a problem to fly with. Has anyone taken the overnight train from Bangkok to Chiang mai? How did you find the ride? How many suitcases are allowed on the train?
