Moving to Chiang Mai in 2 years

A couple in our early 60's, we're looking at moving to Chiang Mai in a couple of years. Plan to visit and stay for a month to get the lay of the land., but what areas do you suggest best value for money when renting a decent condo/apartment for long term?
