Kampala information

Hi Everyone,

It's looking like I might be moving with my girlfriend to Kampala early in January 2010 for 3 years. I'm really looking forward to it, but I don't really know much about the area, so I have a few questions:

1) Where are the nice areas to live as an expat?

2) Roughly how much will we be spending on accomodation? We'd be looking for a 2 or 3 bed apartment or house in a nice area with water, electricity, telephone, security etc. I've had a quick look on the internet but most of what I could find seemed to be about holiday rental, rather than long-term rental, and was very very expensive (US $2000-$3000 per month). Is this right? If so it would make Kampala MUCh more expensive to live in than anywhere else I've been to or heard about in Africa! Since we're staying for quite a while, I wouldn't mind unfurnished accomodation, if it would be cheaper.

3) Is fast broadband internet access available anywhere in Kampala? Again, on the net the best speed I could find was for 512KB, and the price for that was quite eye-watering!

4) Will we need to buy a car to live out there? Or is public transport reasonably safe and reliable. How safe is driving in Uganda?

5) Anything else I've missed? In fact, any information, advice, stories or websites about living in Kampala and Uganda would be very warmly received!

Cheers,
Chris
