Areas to live in Abu Dhabi

Hello - we are relocating to Abu Dhabi in the very near future and are wanting some advice on housing. Do most expats live in compounds or highrises? Which areas are highly recommended? We have an allowance of 10k per month and really would like a nice villa (even if we have to put in some $$). Thanks in advance for any help.
