Pets in Europe

Hello-

Does anyone have personal experience taking pets to Europe? I may have the opportunity to take a position in the UK. We have a dog that we do not want to leave behind. Is there really a 7 month process of getting a microchip, innoculations, etc. as part of the Pet Travel Scheme (PETS)?
