moving to uk with a toddler

hi,
my husband and i are australian, thinking about going to the uk to work for a couple of years. we have a 12 months old son, and we'll need to put him in child care. what are the child care facilities like in the uk, is there a long waiting list like here in australia? how much does it cost? we're both nurses who will be working in major hospitals, are there child care facilities offer to their staffs? anyone with info are great appreciated.
