Salaries really lower in London?

I have seen some messages in this forum commenting on London and/or UK salaries being lower than in the US, and cost of living being higher. Are there any online sources for finding specific information on this?

For example, could a manager at a restaurant or store earn around 35,000 pounds per year, and their assistant, around 26,000 pounds, or would it be far less? What might a new teacher earn? I'm just trying to get a general idea of wages, since my husband and I visited London recently and know what some of the day-to-day costs of living are like. Costs of rental and property are easy to find online. But I haven't found specific salary info, so it's hard to make a judgment as to whether we really could afford to live and work in London.
